Workshop 1: Emotional Safety Zines

DECEMBER 11

6:30pm - 9:00pm EST

Virtual

Facilitated by Omolara Williams McCallister
Emotional safety zines are a pocket sized, hand drawn guide that provides prompts for you to create an emotional safety plan. An emotional safety plan is an outline of the things that you and others can do to support yourself when you are in distress. An emotional safety plan also includes a personalized guide of how to diagnose if you are in distress. I included this part because I lived in such a constant state of distress that it became normalized and I became disconnected from my physical and emotional needs. My body had to shut down for me to understand that I needed care and support. Being able to identify early signs of distress has helps me to take better care of myself.

To that end the zine is intended to help to facilitate communication with yourself and with folks who care for you when you are out of equilibrium. Each zine provides space for you to list out: the things that trigger you; the things that further irritate you when you are out of equilibrium; the thought and behavior patterns that you engage in when you are out of equilibrium; restorative practices that can help bring you back to equilibrium; spaces that help you to feel safe and supported; and the contact information for people that you can call for various kinds of support.
